At an altitude of 2 040 metres, Saint-Véran, where it is said “cockerels peck at the stars” is one of the “Plus beaux villages de France” (Most Beautiful Villages of France). Tradition is omnipresent. Log-built chalets, larch wood fountains and sundials give a unique charm to the highest district in France. 

La Grave is also among the Plus beaux villages de France (Most beautiful villages in France) Architecture in the Buëch is totally different, the villages of Serres, Rosans or Orpierre give a taste of the mountains of Provence. Houses, fountains, communal ovens, religious buildings, the mountain heritage will have something to seduce you just like the large cultural sites. Among the most remarkable are: Gap, Briançon, Mont-Dauphin, Embrun, Boscodon, Notre-Dame du Laus, Château de Montmaur, Château de Tallard, etc. 

Whether derived from legends, local memory or historical facts, the Hautes-Alpes are packed with traditions that are passed down from generation to generation.
