Stay Tour du Thabor - L'Échaillon
Departing from Névache, we propose a large-scale hike, straddling the Névach and Maurien territories, to discover these wild and mineral mountains.
An original circuit, from refuge to refuge, from lake to lake, from valley to valley, that will satisfy hikers who appreciate wide open spaces and long days of walking. An itinerary punctuated by climbs to summits offering splendid panoramic views. A must-see!
Day 01: Névache - Col des Acles - Côte Névachaise - Granges de la vallée étroite
Meet at 9:30 am at the Echaillon hotel in Névache (1600 m), where you can park your car for the week if you've brought it with you. From the hotel, we head down to the village of Plampinet (1480 m) - as a muscular wake-up call - from where we take the track up to the isolated hamlet of Les Acles. From here, we circumnavigate the Guion via the Col des Acles (2260 m) and the Côte Névachaise to reach the Col de l'Echelle (1779 m). From the crest, we have a superb view of the narrow valley and Thabor. We return to the valley via the Passage de l'Echelle and follow its torrent to Les Granges.
1100m ascent - 950m descent - 7 to 8 hours' walk
Day 02: Granges de la vallée étroite - Mont Thabor - Refuge du Thabor
From the refuge (1765 m), we climb up the narrow valley to the old Blanchet mines and Prat du Plan (2200 m). Under the foothills of Grand Seru, we follow the Way of the Cross that leads to the chapel of Mont Thabor, first through alpine pastures grazed by Italian cows, then over the orange ridges characteristic of this summit (3178 m). Then it's down to the Col des Méandes, and a short final climb to the refuge via the Col de la Vallée Etroite (2434 m).
1500m ascent - 800m descent - 7 to 8h walk
Day 03: Refuge du Thabor - Pointe et col des Sarrasins - Refuge des Marches
We start the day by descending below Mounioz via the chalets of the same name. We head up the valley where the Sarrasins stream flows, to climb the Pointe des Sarrasins (2963 m). A beautiful walk at altitude, with 360-degree panoramic views of the Maurienne and Tarentaise peaks, and a glimpse of the improbable old galena mine. We then reach the Col des Sarrasins (2844 m), before descending to the Refuge des Marches (2230 m), nestled in its valley above the large man-made Bissorte lake.
900m ascent - 1200 m descent - 5 to 6 hours' walk
Day 04: Refuge des Marches - Passage du Pic de Thabor - Pointe de Terre Rouge - Refuge Terre Rouge
A colorful day! From the refuge, we climb up the valley along the Bissorte torrent to the rocky cirque nestled beneath the Pic du Thabor (3207 m). At its foot we discover the Pic de Thabor pass (2952 m), in an extraordinary geological setting. From here, we climb to the astonishing Pointe de Terre Rouge (3080 m), well deserving of its name. The descent route to the Terre Rouge hut (2182 m) will be chosen by your guide, who will have several options, depending on the shape of the group and the weather.
900m ascent - 950m descent - 6 to 7h walking time
Day 05: Refuge Terre Rouge - Col de Valmeinier - Lacs des Muandes - Refuge de Ricou
We return to the Hautes-Alpes and the Névache valley today, climbing up the Neuvache valley to the Glacier lakes and the Col de Valmeinier, then to the Roche du Chardonnet (2950 m). An easy descent takes us to the various lakes in the Muandes valley. From Lac Long, we embark on a long balcony traverse to the Ricou refuge (2115 m).
800m ascent - 900m descent - 6h30 to 7h30 walking time
Day 06: Refuge de Ricou - Pic du Lac Blanc - le Vallon - Névache
A classic of the Clarée valley, with its beauty and a last view of the Thabor (and the Mont Blanc... among many others): we climb to the Pic du Lac Blanc, which 'flirts with the 3000' at 2980 meters. Then it's time to return to civilization at Névache via the long vallon du vallon for a gentle descent. Dismissal around 4:30pm.
