Queyras

The Queyras became a Parc naturel régional (Regional Natural Park) as early as 1977. The value of the landscape and heritage of this jewel of the Hautes-Alpes is indeed priceless.

At an altitude of 2040 metres, Saint-Véran is one of the “Plus beaux villages de France” (Most Beautiful Villages of France). Tradition is omnipresent. Log-built chalets, larch wood fountains and sundials all give a unique character to the highest village in France where it is said “cockerels peck at the stars”. It becomes a village resort in the winter as do seven other neighbouring villages. Abriès, Aiguilles, Arvieux, Ceillac, Château-Ville-Vieille, Molines and Ristolas. 

Hikes to the high altitude lakes and refuge huts, rambling on the Route des Grandes Alpes (Great Alpine Road) through the astounding Guil gorges and over the mythical Izoard pass, visits to the Chateau-Queyras fort, and the discovery of the Artisan Centre where wooden toys and sculpted objects are a reflection of local traditions, astronomy at the Château-Renard observatory at 2936 m! The Queyras is full of character.
