Visite XXL: le Fort Dauphin et le Fort des Trois Têtes
This 2-in-1 tour takes you inside Fort Dauphin. A small structure built in the 18th century, Fort Dauphin follows the shape of the plateau on which it was built. It was designed to house around a hundred men and a stockpile of gunpowder. The tour continues with a visit to the immense Trois Têtes fort, a major fortification in Briançon's fortified belt. The special history of the fortifications during the Second World War will also be explored.
Duration: 3h
RDV: car park at the firing range, Briançon
Please allow plenty of time for travel and parking if you wish to leave on time
2 ways of getting to the fort's firing range:
By car: From the Heritage Department, Cité Vauban, take avenue Baldenberger, then left to join avenue de la Libération then avenue de la République. At the bottom of the hill, at the first roundabout, go straight ahead and at the next roundabout, turn left into avenue du Général de Gaulle. At the next roundabout, turn left and left again at the end of the road, then immediately right at the roundabout towards the Col d'Izoard. Drive through the hamlet of Fontchristiane. A few hundred metres after the exit sign for the hamlet, take the road on the left, in the bend just before the waste centre.
Caution: reduced visibility, dangerous crossing. Continue on the road that climbs up through the fortifications. Reach the firing range on a platform used as a car park, where there is a long concrete and wood barrack.
On foot: from the upper town, take the path leading from the Asfeld bridge, which takes 45 minutes to climb.
Bring suitable walking shoes, water and loose-fitting clothing.
