Rambling and Hiking

The Hautes-Alpes have 1800 kilometres of Grandes Randonnées (GR-Great Hiking routes), 5000 kilometres of Petites Randonées (short walks) and a good dozen Tours de Pays (local circuits) and are most certainly a paradise for those who enjoy walking, hiking or trekking.

The footpaths throughout the Hautes-Alpes are varied and offer an incredible natural diversity as they cross the Parcs naturels régionaux du Queyras and the Baronnies Provençales (Queyras and Baronnies Provençales Regional Parks), the Parc national des Écrins (Écrins National Park) and nine sectors that include fields of lavender, orchards or glaciers. They can be followed alone or accompanied by a mountain guide or leader

At the end of a hike, or to have a break, make the most of the refuge huts where experienced mountaineers and hikers share their experiences and dream together. There are 45 in the Hautes-Alpes. Some, like the Gioberny refuge, are easy to access, others, such as the recently renovated Bec de l’Aigle refuge (Eagle Beak refuge) are legendary.
